Katie O

“Cancer is a thief of many things, but it doesn’t have to define how your story ends. My journey with melanoma has been challenging, but it has also been incredibly rewarding.”

At just 25 years old, Katie was diagnosed with melanoma after discovering a dark itchy mole. When tests showed no spreading in her body, she believed she was in the clear. Unfortunately, two years later, her cancer reoccurred at Stage III and spread to her lymph nodes. “Within months, I was stage IV,” Katie says. “The news was devastating, and I was told I had only weeks to live.”

Over the course of eight years, Katie’s cancer spread to several parts of her body including her brain, lung, uterus, kidneys, and spine. “The journey was grueling, involving 6 treatments and 18 surgeries, but during the darkest times, I had the unwavering support of my husband, two daughters, and my family, who all played a crucial role in my fight,” she says. “The outstanding team at the Angeles Clinic and Mayo Clinic gave me options when there were none, and I survived.”

Now an 11-year survivor, Katie shares her experience to raise awareness and support others facing a cancer diagnosis. “Receiving a cancer diagnosis is shocking,” she says. “It took me years to understand that you need to be your own advocate and find support from online communities and organizations. By connecting with others who understand your journey, you feel less alone.”

Katie also uses her experience to encourage others to practice sun safety and early detection by seeing a dermatologist annually, which is crucial in preventing melanoma. “Protecting your skin from harmful UV exposure by using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and seeking shade is essential,” she reminds us. “Remember, melanoma can affect anyone, so be proactive.”
