Isabella Leaño founded the Smash Cancer Loyola Team in 2019 in honor of her grandfather, who passed away from leukemia. ‘Smash Cancer’ holds an annual tennis-a-thon tournament where the men’s and women’s tennis teams of Loyola University New Orleans play for 12 hours straight.

“I combined my love for tennis and admiration for my grandfather into ‘Smash Cancer,’ an organization aimed at raising awareness and funds for cancer research. This spirit of service, instilled in me by my Lolo, has served as the cornerstone of my journey in making a difference in the lives of others,” says Isabella.

SU2C-SUPPORTED CLINICAL TRIAL YIELDS PROMISING RESULTS FOR MELANOMA PATIENTS

We are excited to announce the results of a SU2C Catalyst® Research Team study that showed that a new drug combination utilized before surgery completely eliminated or shrunk melanoma tumors in 70% of trial participants.

This first-of-its-kind clinical trial explored using a combination of targeted therapy and immunotherapy before surgery in melanoma patients with and without a mutation in the BRAF gene. About one half of all melanoma patients have this mutation, making this breakthrough potentially vital for patients whose cancers don’t respond well to immunotherapy alone.

Stand Up To Cancer’s efforts at the forefront of cutting-edge research were recognized by the Los Angeles Business Journal.

SU2C’s contributions to major scientific breakthroughs include the first successful demonstration of an mRNA vaccine for pancreatic cancer treatment, the first CAR-T cell therapy for widespread use and an FDA approval for an immunotherapy as a first-line treatment for patients with colorectal cancer. These breakthroughs are a testament to the organization’s commitment to saving lives through fostering collaboration within cancer research.
