Meet Kevin Allen

“Cancer research is vital because of the many lives it can impact and the quality of life it can provide.”

Competitive bodybuilder and personal trainer, Kevin Allen, was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer in 2016 after months of misdiagnoses, weight loss, and intense pain. The cancer had spread to his spine, hip, and lungs, and left him nearly paralyzed. For initial treatment, he underwent a 12-hour spinal surgery, unsuccessful chemotherapy, and 15 rounds of radiation. Looking for better options, he found out about a clinical trial from his oncologist. “Having stage 4 cancer didn’t leave me with many choices, because all the other treatments were not working. So, when they presented the trial, I was beyond happy to participate.”

The trial that Kevin took part in was led by the SU2C-Prostate Cancer Foundation Prostate Cancer Dream Team. “It saved my life,” he shares. Within a year and a half of his diagnosis, Kevin was back in the gym – reclaiming his own fitness and helping others with their wellness journeys.

During his treatment, Kevin was moved by the empathy and dedication of his healthcare team. As a way to pay it forward, he now works with caregivers on their physical and mental health so that they can feel supported while caring for others. “Seeing my nurses break down and cry during my treatments inspired me to give back in a way that would not only impact them, but also those close to them,” he explains.

Today, Kevin continues to receive treatment and is a proud father of three. Kevin’s advice for anyone navigating a diagnosis is to ask questions and seek second opinions. “The relationship with your doctor is very important, so make sure it’s a good fit,” he adds. Kevin leaves with his mantra, “NEVER GIVE UP, and when you get knocked down, GET BACK UP.”
