Tim Salmon to Appear at MLB® All-Star 5K

June 24, 2010 – Former Angels outfielder Tim Salmon is proudly showing his support for cancer research and education by joining Major League Baseball, Angels Hall of Famer Bobby Grich and Jillian Michaels, star of The Biggest Loser and Losing It With Jillian, at the All-Star Game Charity 5K & Fun Run presented by Sports Authority and Nike, taking place on Sunday, July 11, 2010. Salmon will be handing out medals and congratulating participants as they cross the finish line. The event will benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation, Stand Up To Cancer, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and City of Hope with Major League Baseball donating 100% of registration fees to the organizations.

Salmon, who played in the Majors from 1992-2006, spent his entire 14-year playing career in an Angels uniform. A third round pick in the 1989 First-Year Player Draft, Salmon compiled a career .282 batting average with 299 home runs, 1,016 RBI and 1,674 hits. Tim’s 299 career homers rank first in Angels history, while his 1,016 RBI rank second to his longtime teammate Garret Anderson (1,292). In 1993, the right-handed hitting outfielder was named the American League Rookie of the Year after batting .283 with 31 home runs, 95 RBI, 35 doubles and 93 runs scored. Salmon, who quickly became a fan favorite and earned the nickname “King Fish,” finished seventh in American League Most Valuable Player voting in 1995 after turning in a career-best .330 batting average. In 2002, when the Long Beach, California native was named Major League Baseball’s Comeback Player of the Year, Salmon played a crucial role in the Angels postseason run as the Club went on to defeat the San Francisco Giants in seven games to claim the franchise’s only World Series Championship.

“As a long time supporter and participant of the Prostate Cancer Foundation’s Home Run Challenge, I am more than delighted to get involved with PCF and the other notable cancer charities during the 2010 All- Star Game Charity 5K & Fun Run,” said Salmon. “Cancer has definitely impacted me and my family, therefore, one of my objectives in life is to work to help find a cure once and for all.”
